Contract of Participation

This is the contract we gave to the dancers and the DJ that are participating in our music video. We wanted to make sure that they are committed and will not let us down when we want to film.

X-Factor Case Study

We had to get into the mindset of and X-Factor judge and thinking about what makes a star and what the 'X-Factor' is.
Our first task was to define the X-Factor in a sentence and our response was that it was a commercial singing competition.
We then had to say what we wanted to see this year from the contestants. Our response was a unique recording artist.
We were asked what group we would like to have and we said we would want the girls because they are more likely to win and have a Christmas No 1 after the show.
We watched a few auditions from the first shows and had to say what feedback we would give them as they were standing on the stage and would we be thinking from a professional point of view that we wouldn't really tell them on stage.
The people who auditioned were Janet Devlin, Frankie Cocozza, Goldie Cheung, 2 Shoes, The Keys, Jade Richards, Luke Lucas, Craig Colton, Amelia Lily, John Wilding, Terry Winstanley and Misha Bryan.

One of the contestants were 2Shoes. From their audition we thought their audition was really good, they had good recording voice and they would fit into the pop genre.
From a professional point of view we thought that they needed to change their overall image and their fake tans needed to go if they were going to progress in the show because they were a bit too much to take in. Their harmony needed to be in sync. but overall, it was very promising.

The Keys were also contestants. We thought their audition was good and gave a lasting impression and they also had a good image so their audience would be teenage girls.
From a professional point of view we thought that they didn't fit a genre because they had everything going on from RnB to hip hop so they would need to focus on one genre.

We then had to think if the contestants had anything special and if they were just singing they same thing we as audiences wanted to hear even if they sounded a bit different. We started talking about the culture industry and we looked at a theory by two men called Adorno and Horkheimer and their theory was taken from the book called Production of Culture/Cultures of Production Paul Du Gay, Sage 1997. Adorno and Horkheimer adopted the term 'culture industry' to argue that the cultural items were produced was the similarlyto how other industries manufactured vast quantities of consumer goods.

They linked the idea of the 'culture industry' to the model of 'mass culture' in which cultural production had become a routine, standardized, repetitive operation that produced undemanding cultural commodities, which in turn resulted in a type of consumption that was also standardized and passive. They argued that the form of music, art and literature produced today were the same thing and nothing was different and it had been corrupted by the production methods and regimes of industrial capitalism. This is because most record labels are privately owned and they will tell an artists or group like JLS who did not win X-Factor (but are signed Epic records) change their image in order to fit the image of what the record company wants to sell.

This video shows JLS in their first audition and the genre of music they sang was soulful, melodic and they harmonized frequently which made them look more original and gave them an aura of individuality.

This video is one of JLS' most popular videos and after going through the X-Factor machine their main purpose has now been making music for the record company they are signed to. They have stripped away of what makes them individuals and made them into a group that teenage girls will like. The repetitive chorus of this JLS song and frequently recurring refrains makes each song more commercial and the more people hear it everywhere, the more they want to buy an album or download the song. Adorno and Horkheimer concluded that it is all done for calculated commercial reasons so that the song will be marked on the listeners mind and provoke a purchase or download.
Adorno and Horkheimer said that the songs produced today are not spontaneous and there is nothing special or different as everything we hear on the radio is the same, as is what we watch on TV. Our brains as an audience is meant to reject anything that isn't familiar and listen to the things they want us to listen to.

Production Plan

This production plan is to help us sort out all the things we need from now till we finish filming. The first thing we need to sort out is to finish our animatic of our storyboard.

The animatic would be done on imovie and we would need to put on song over it to portray how we want it to look.We have found the location we are going to shoot at and they are: in front of a church, at a bus-stop, in front of a gym centre, a dram room(club scene), a dance studio and a classroom.

We need take evidence of RECCE for the location we are going to be filming at because it will help us make sure that the lighting of the place is ok and and if the places are going to are ok when we decide to film. We also need to inform the cast and dancers in the music video when they are going to be needed so they are not preoccupied on the day we are going to film.

We won't be needing any props for the dancers in our music video, but we will be needing a turntable for the DJ to use.
We also need to inform the dancers that are going to be in the club scene to wear clothes they can dance in and something bright so we can see them in and also because that's the theme for our music video.

The last thing we need to do after we have sorted things out is to schedule the dates we will be filming on and how long we will be filming for so that everyone is involved and know what they are supposed to be doing.

Audience Response

Production Journal 3

We started to write a shot by shot in the sequence of how we want our music video to be. The purpose of writing a shot by shot was to then draw it on our storyboard to avoid imperfections. We had some difficulties in doing this task as neither myself or my partner are artistic, therefore, we struggled with the drawing part.

Due to our inability to draw properly, we wrote down what each shot should look like on the storyboard and we needed to match the shots with the lyrics. Neither of us had the song on any device which resulted in us having to print out the lyrics. This is a mistake that will not happen again because one -if not both- of us will have the song on some sort of device as we are planning so we can have a visual of what shot will be shown at a specific verse of the song.

Once our briefs were chosen and we had decided on what song to do, we needed to do a moodboard to show what our music video may consist of and give it house/dance music connotations. We had a brief idea of how we wanted our music video to look but we also knew that in the process of storyboarding, those brief ideas have have to change.

We wanted the moodboard to convey the dance/house feeling as that is what our video will consist of. We printed out the lyrics of our chosen song which made us able to show what shot would be shown when a particular verse was sung. We wanted to give the impression of a club feeling which is why we had strobe/bright lights as that would contrast nicely to the dark background we are planning to have.

The pictures of dancers, a DJ and party people are elements that we hope to have in our music video. We made sure to use bright colours to emphasize the fact that this is a colourful genre, which is why we used colourful paper and felt tip pens to begin with. Collectively, we decided to have a DJ on our moodboard not only because he is good looking, but because having the DJ in our music video will make it relate to the people more as he too wants to have a good time.

When we received our briefs, our primary task was to then get into groups that we would work best in. When deciding who to be part of we had to take into conseideration people that will contribute to the group and were hrad workers.

I decided to pair myself up with another member of my class. We chose to do the House/Dance genre as we came to the conclusion that it would be difficult to do a video for a girl group if it was to be just the two of us. As house/dance music is usually produced by an DJ we decided that our artist would be a DJ. After much deliberation, we decided on the name DJ Delirious as it just stood out and seemed to be a perfect fit. When the name was decided we then had to decide on what song to use that fits with our brief; the song we chose couldn't be too old or too recent.

In the end, we decided to do a song called Boogie 2nite by girl group Booty Luv. Before we could get that ball rolling we had the have our teachers approval before we went any further.

Audience Research Questionnaire

Audience Feedback

Dj Delirious sets a trap.
Three pupils that cant stop dancing get sent out their classes.
Consider who will be cast as Dj Delirious.
Health and safety concerns with ceiling light in one of our locations.
Set up mise-en-scene so it actually looks like a club.
Emphasize the concept of dance.

We pitched our Music Video ideas to our class and we got some feedback and what they thought was good, and what we needed work on.

We discussed who we were going to cast as DJ Delirious to act as a DJ in our music video and we decided that we were going to use a member of staff at school who has an idea on how to run a club. We also discussed health&safety rules in the club shot because the room we are going to use has faulty lights on the ceiling so we would have to make sure the room was available to use when we need it because of the cast in our music videos.

We discussed the mise-en-scene in the room we are going to shoot in and the class suggested that we have to make sure all the things in the room we are going to film in should be cleared before we get there because otherwise the quality of the video won't be as good.
They also gave feedback on the cast and dancers in the video and they said that we would have to make sure all of them are committed before the day of shooting to avoid any inconveniences and people not turning up.

Lastly, our teacher told us that we would have to make sure the lighting in the room was stable and working and we also had to make sure that whilst shooting that the lighting was really good.

Digipaks

Describe what a digipak is.
A digipak is a CD case, but instead of having the standard jewel case; it is made from cardboard. Tehy usually emphasize the genre and have an ongoing colour scheme.

What are the codes and conventions of a digipak?
the codes and conventions included in a digipak are: images so that the audience can be visually stimulated, may include lyrics in the book of thanks, the name must be on the spine of the digipak so that when it it put up on a shelf, the name of the artist and album are on show, there must be a barcode and the copyright must be visible, the website and record label must also be on the digipak and there must be a logo.

Why would a record label choose to release a digipak rather than a CD in jewel case?
Record labels differ, so one record label may choose to release a digipak because they are more personal and intimate as they are pocket size, however, another record label may not release a digipak because they will ruin easily as the case is more fragile.

Moodboard

This is the moodboard for what we wanted our music video to look like. We included various pictures to show the type of people we wanted to cast in our video. We included pictures of male and female dancers because that's what the video will be based on dance. We also made sure we got a specific picture of dancers because we wanted people who could dance to house music rather than another genre of music like disco.
We also included a picture of what we wanted the DJ to look like as a guideline for us.
We also said what shots would be shown when the lyrics'I found a place' was playing. We wanted the dancers in the video to be shown looking for a place to dance until they all meet and find a place they can dance together. The colours were also meant to portray the feeling and what the lighting would like in the video. We wanted the lighting to be bright but the setting would most probably be dark.
The font for the name of our artist 'DJ Delirious' was also chosen carefully because we wanted it to be bold and to be able to be seen. The colour we chose was also deliberate to make it visible in the midst of all the bright colours.
